ISLAMABAD: Christoph Hoerstel, Federal Chairman of The German Center, has praised Pakistan&rsquo;s potential role in mediating the US-Iran dialogue, describing it as a &ldquo;wonderful opportunity&rdquo; for the country to demonstrate its diplomatic capabilities. He made these remarks during a Pakistan TV programme, Beyond Borders.&nbsp;Hoerstel recalled that Pakistan, some 30 years ago, was mentioned on the main page of China&rsquo;s Ministry for Foreign Affairs as the only friend China had at that time. &ldquo;Pakistan has very good working relationship with Western countries, we can see very clearly that this was a fantastic idea for Pakistan to enter into this reality.&nbsp; It is a very important one, it is a strategic one. In fact, from my point of view, that was a glorious idea. I think Pakistan has the very best ability to carry this plan out,&rdquo; he said. Hoerstel referred to Oman&rsquo;s previous attempt to mediate between the US and Israel, saying that while Oman was &ldquo;very honestly constructive,&rdquo; it was impossible to bridge the huge gap between the positions of the two sides.&nbsp;&ldquo;Positions of Iran and the US are so far away&mdash;it&rsquo;s not a gap, that&rsquo;s an abyss. Turkiye is a NATO member and a bridge with Iran. Egypt is essential for issues like Palestine. These four countries are forwarding their own foreign policy issues, and they will set a clear example of joint policy towards peace under the host country, Pakistan,&rdquo; he said. Over 400,000 frontline workers, accompanied by supervisors and area in-charges, will conduct door-to-door vaccination, administering two drops of the polio vaccine to every eligible child,&rdquo; she added. The PM&rsquo;s aide said the programme had refocused on core operational basics, including selecting vaccinators from local communities, strengthening their training and interpersonal communication skills, and improving supportive supervision to ensure effective engagement with caregivers at the household level. Ayesha Raza Farooq explained that campaign quality will be monitored more rigorously this year through independent monitoring, digital tracking systems and daily district-level reviews led by deputy commissioners, allowing for real-time corrective action whenever gaps are identified.&nbsp; She said the emphasis has shifted from post-campaign evaluation to pre-campaign preparedness and intra-campaign monitoring, enabling the programme to respond immediately rather than retrospectively. &ldquo;Polio cases have declined significantly, falling from 74 in 2024 to 31 in 2025, with the virus now confined to limited geographical pockets. The 2026 roadmap therefore focuses on high-risk areas, including parts of South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi and mobile populations, while major urban centres such as Lahore have shown marked improvement,&rdquo; he added. Referring to disease detection, she said Pakistan operates one of the world&rsquo;s largest and most sensitive polio surveillance systems.&nbsp; &ldquo;We have 127 environmental sampling sites in 88 districts across the country where we&rsquo;re collecting sewage samples throughout the month to see if we detect any virus there. Now why is that critical? Because that helps the programme stay ahead of the virus and we are able to see what paths the virus is taking across the country. It helps us identify high-risk districts,&rdquo; she added. Ayesha Raza Farooq underscored the importance of political ownership, noting that the prime minister personally chairs the National Polio Task Force and conducts regular stock-taking meetings. He was speaking in Pakistan TV&rsquo;s show &lsquo;Beyond Borders&rsquo; where he discussed the latest United Nations report on global water bankruptcy of which he is the lead author.Madani said technology alone cannot solve the crisis. &ldquo;Without proper policies, technology would fail. Without technology, policies would not be sufficient to deal with the problems or to address the problems that the world in the 21st century is dealing with,&rdquo; he said. Professor Madani said the era of treating water stress as a temporary challenge is over, and called on governments to adopt decisive and coordinated solutions. &ldquo;It is better to admit to the failure rather than to live with the delusion,&rdquo; he said, adding that it needs to be taken &ldquo;seriously not only by the policymakers, but also by scientists and the media in communications with the general public&rdquo;. He said water scarcity is no longer a future risk but a present-day disruption already affecting food systems, trade networks and national stability across regions. He said water shortages, aquifer depletion and climate shocks are compounding global pressures created by conflicts, trade wars and fragile supply chains. He said countries heavily dependent on agriculture face the most complex trade-offs as water cuts threaten both food production and employment. &ldquo;It&#39;s not an easy problem, given the fact that 70% of the world&#39;s water is in the good hands of farmers, mostly in poor economies, mostly in the global south, where governments do not have the power or capacity to diversify their economies overnight and provide alternative modes of livelihood for the farmers,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If you don&#39;t act today, the only choice would be rationing,&rdquo; Madani said, warning that cutting water without providing alternatives to farmers means unemployment, migration and conflict. Therefore, he added, a lot of measures need to be combined to act on a timely basis before it is late. Professor Kaveh Madani said efficiency-enhancing technologies, selective supply expansion, consumption reduction and data-driven management must work together, adding that tools such as satellite monitoring and artificial intelligence can improve trust and decision-making. ISLAMABAD: Iran&rsquo;s Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghaddam, has said the United States and Israel are orchestrating unrest inside Iran, warning that any foreign aggression would be met with a strong and decisive response. ISLAMABAD: Bangladesh&rsquo;s Adviser for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, on Tuesday praised the Punjab government&rsquo;s innovative efforts to combat air pollution in its provincial capital, Lahore and expressed keen interest in learning and adopting similar practices in Bangladesh. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Pakistan TV, she further expressed Bangladesh&rsquo;s desire to replicate the Pakistani model for promoting renewable energy, particularly through rooftop solar installations. Syeda Rizwana Hasan is visiting Pakistan to attend 28th Sustainable Development Conference organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in Islamabad from November 4 to 7. The Punjab government has rolled out a multi-pronged smog mitigation campaign that includes truck-mounted anti-smog guns, fog cannon units that spray ultra-fine water mist to capture PM2.5 and PM10 particles (tiny airborne particles that cause smog) and bring them to the ground. &ldquo;I was very encouraged to hear that Lahore is dealing with its air pollution problems with new innovations,&rdquo; Hasan said, adding that Bangladesh would be happy to learn from Punjab government to adopt these innovations. &ldquo;I will be very happy if the lessons of Lahore can be communicated to us, so that Bangladesh can adopt to the same practices that Lahore has introduced,&rdquo; she added. Hasan said Bangladesh was also looking to convert to renewable energy and Pakistani model of popularising rooftop solars could be very useful in this regard. &nbsp; &ldquo;We know that Pakistan already has got huge success in popularising renewable energy through the usage of solar panels on their rooftops and this is a model that can be very useful for the government of Bangladesh,&rdquo; she added. Bangladesh&rsquo;s climate advisor said both countries could also cooperate in other areas in terms of water security, natural resource based protection, and plastic waste management. Speaking about international community&rsquo;s response to the climate change issue, she said Pakistan and Bangladesh together with other developing countries took the lead back in 2022 in conference of parties of the UNFCCC, and managed to push forward and get a fund for loss and damage set up at the international level. She added that both countries were instrumental in establishing the Loss and Damage Fund and should now collectively press global leaders to honor their commitments regarding its disbursement, noting that the fund will be operationalized soon. The adviser said both countries are positively considering the launch of direct flights between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

LAHORE: Pakistan&rsquo;s digital economy could contribute between 5%-7% of gross domestic product by 2030, provided structural constraints are addressed and reforms accelerate, according to a new report by the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI).&nbsp;Titled &ldquo;Recommendations for Pakistan&rsquo;s Digital Future,&rdquo; the OICCI Digital Report 2025 presents a detailed assessment of the country&rsquo;s digital landscape, highlighting both measurable gains and persistent bottlenecks shaping future growth.&nbsp;The report frames Pakistan&rsquo;s digital sector as a rapidly expanding but uneven ecosystem, where strong growth in connectivity, exports and digital finance is being tempered by infrastructure gaps and slow policy execution, raising the stakes for reforms needed to unlock its full economic potential.&nbsp;The report identifies the digital sector as an emerging driver of productivity, exports and financial inclusion, supported by a growing user base and rising adoption of digital services.&nbsp;Pakistan&rsquo;s IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) exports have reached $3.8 billion, while the freelance economy contributes $779 million in earnings.&nbsp;Digital access continues to expand, with more than 150 million broadband subscriptions and over 200 million telecom connections. The broader mobile ecosystem contributes an estimated $17 billion to the national economy.&nbsp;The report also underscores rapid growth in digital finance.&nbsp;&ldquo;Pakistan has made notable strides in digital payments and financial inclusion. The Raast instant payment system processed Rs18 trillion in peer-to-peer transactions in FY26, demonstrating the rapid adoption of digital financial services,&rdquo; said OICCI President Yousaf Hussain.&nbsp;However, infrastructure limitations remain a key constraint.&nbsp;Only 18% of cellular towers are connected through fiber, well below the global benchmark of around 40%, limiting network capacity and readiness for next-generation technologies.&nbsp;Policy execution is another concern.&nbsp;While engagement on digital policy has improved, implementation remains slow. The report notes that only about one-quarter of recommendations from OICCI&rsquo;s 2022 Digital Report have been carried out.&nbsp;&ldquo;Only about one-quarter of OICCI&rsquo;s digital policy recommendations issued in OICCI&rsquo;s Digital Report 2022 have been implemented so far. Faster execution, improved fiber penetration and a more investment-friendly regulatory environment will be essential to unlock Pakistan&rsquo;s digital potential,&rdquo; said M. Abdul Aleem, Secretary General of OICCI.&nbsp;To address these gaps, the report recommends reducing taxes on broadband services and digital devices, accelerating fiber deployment, ensuring regulatory clarity in data protection and cybersecurity, and strengthening public-private collaboration.&nbsp;The government has set a target of $5 billion in IT exports for FY26, while analysts project exports could reach around $4.5 billion, implying annual growth of 18% to 20% from the $3.8 billion recorded in FY25.&nbsp;Under the broader Uraan Pakistan framework, policymakers are targeting $10 billion in IT exports by FY29, requiring a compound annual growth rate of approximately 27%.&nbsp;The report concludes that while Pakistan&rsquo;s digital economy is expanding and foundational elements are in place, closing infrastructure gaps, accelerating policy implementation, and investing in advanced skills such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity will determine whether current momentum translates into sustained economic impact
